I don’t think I’ve ever done a race before where poles were strongly suggested even for the 26K distance. Very glad I grabbed my old REI hiking poles( and now of course I want some fancy folding carbon fiber ones!) as the course at @brokenarrowskyrace was legit! I really had fun, was challenged, and already want to go back next year. GREAT RACE ORGANIZATION!
I ask my athletes most post-race Mondays what worked/went well and what we need to improve on.
I would say my pacing/nutrition/hydration was spot on. I knew I had minimal fitness and stayed conservative, ate every hour, and went through 58 OZ of Skratch in 4 hours(last bit was downhill and it was cool in the low 50s at best) . I interestingly passed people on the climbs pretty steadily.
Needed improvement- I could run more coming in (DUH) and I need to address the downhill running where I lost places. More drills for sure and I think some of this me being overly cautious post multiple TBI from a few years back.
Already looking forward to next week’s Woodmonster Classic !
